The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) represent a group of more than a dozen major chronic infectious diseases, most of them parasitic infections, found in the developing countries of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Thirteen NTDs represent the most common infections of people living in extreme poverty. These diseases disproportionately affect the bottom billion, producing chronic disability resulting in impaired child growth and intellectual and cognitive development, impaired pregnancy outcomes, and decreased worker productivity.

Question 1 of 5
1. Question
Which of the following is not a NTD?
Correct
While malaria can be considered a tropical parasitic disease, it is not classified as neglected. The WHO lists six common features among all NTDs. These features include the following: (1) diseases of poverty, (2) affect populations with minimal visibility and political voice, (3) do not spread widely, (4) cause stigma and discrimination, (5) have important impact on morbidity and mortality, (6) are relatively neglected by research and (7) can be controlled, prevented and eliminated using effective and feasible solutions.

Question 2 of 5
2. Question
Which disease is second to malaria as the most devastating parasitic disease in tropical countries accounting for more than 200,000 deaths annually in sub-Saharan Africa?
Correct
A disease of poverty, Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by infection with a freshwater parasite, which leads to chronic ill-health and is common in both tropical and sub-tropical climates where there is inadequate sanitation. The disease is most commonly spread by an infected individual urinating or defecating near a water source, young children who play and swim in the water are the most susceptible to infection.

Question 3 of 5
3. Question
True or False? NTDs can lead to severe chronic health issues and co-infections with other infectious diseases.
Correct
NTDs can lead to a number of chronic health issues, including blindness, immobility, disfigurement and chronic pain. Children are at higher risk for these complications, along with severe anemia, stunting, malnutrition and cognitive impairment. Co-infections with malaria and HIV are common, especially in endemic regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa.

Question 4 of 5
4. Question
Which of the following best describes the burden of NTDs?
Correct
NTDs are considered to have low mortality and high morbidity. While the death rates among those with NTDs are not high in comparison to “the big three” (HIV, TB, and malaria), NTDs do lead to shortened lifespan as a result of chronic infection.
