The Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 will take place from November 12th to November 14th. This summit, recognizing the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, will be co-convened by the governments of Kenya and Denmark, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This year is also the 50th anniversary of UNFPA.
GBCHealth President Nancy Wildfeir-Field will be speaking on one of the summit’s panels entitled “South-South and Triangular Partnerships to Accelerate the ICPD Promise,” taking place on 12 November from 13:00 – 14:30 EAT.
GBCHealth has a partnership with UNFPA centered on the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend (SWEDD) project. The initiative will be featured in a session at the Summit, titled “Demographic Dividend in the Sahel,” which will take place on 13 November from 11:00 – 12:30 EAT… Read more

By Bud Rock, Principal at Global Water 2020 Far too little attention is given to the immense, yet solvable, crisis of inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in primary health care facilities (HCFs). It is unimaginable today that more than 2 billion people must visit health care facilities that do not provide the most basic requirements of water, toilets and soap.
Mothers and newborns are among the most vulnerable to these problems. More than 17 million mothers give birth each year in hospitals and clinics that lack these fundamental services, risking their own welfare and that of their newborn children. More than one million deaths each year are associated with unclean births, while infections account for 26% of neonatal deaths and 11% of maternal mortality…

This month, the Global Fund held its Sixth Replenishment Conference, the start of the next period of funding for the organization’s work across the globe. The unprecedented replenishment campaign culminated in a spirited display of global solidarity on 10 October in Lyon when USD 14.02 billion were pledged to the Global Fund by an impressive number of donors to the for the next three years. This is the largest amount ever raised for a multilateral health organization. The funds will help save 16 million lives and assist in ending the epidemics of AIDS, TB and malaria by 2030.
Founded as a public-private partnership, engagement with the private sector lies at the core of the work of the Global Fund. More than USD 1 billion of the total pledged amount was made by the private sector and private foundations…

“Antimicrobial resistance is one of the greatest global health challenges today; it is a global issue that can affect anyone, of any age, in any country. More than 700,000 people die every year of drug resistant infection, and the time to act is now. The UNGA side event couldn’t have been held at a better time to highlight the impact of antibiotic resistance on the world and the need for greater awareness and continued engagement on the topic.” This year, on September 23, 2019, during the 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), there was an event to celebrate the year-long success of The AMR Challenge. The key themes of the event were “Celebrating Antimicrobial Resistance Fighters” and “AMR and the Arts”. It featured artists from around the world, who told their stories of AMR through photography, dance, photorealism print, textiles, comics and film.
