Organization: GBCHealth
Location: Switzerland preferred; Africa, Europe, the UK and USA are also options for the right candidate
Duration: 4 months full-time consultancy (February- May 2022) and, subject to further funding, potential for the role to become a full-time contract for 3 years.
GBCHealth
GBCHealth is a global business coalition, working closely with companies, the United Nations, governments, philanthropists, NGOs, civil society, and others to mitigate global and national health risks. We do this via a portfolio of projects and expertise that together fuel the growth of our partners and simultaneously help drive the world towards health equity. Our vision is a global business community that contributes its assets, skills, influence and reach to create a healthier world for employees, their families, and communities.
A core area of GBCHealth’s work is the Global Fund’s Private Sector Constituency. We are seeking a stellar individual to lead this initiative over the next 4 months. Subject to funding, there is further potential for the role to be extended to 3 years.
Background
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was formed in 2001 to address the three epidemics that were impacting many countries around the world. Currently investing US$4 billion a year, it is a highly regarded and hugely successful international financing and partnership organization that attracts, leverages and invests resources to defeat HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria.
The Private Sector Constituency (PSC) is a group of over 20 global businesses that support the Global Fund via activities such as Board-level governance, direct financial support, partnerships, innovative financing programs, in-kind and technical assistance, and in-country implementation.
GBCHealth serves as the Focal Point for the PSC. In this role we deliver a range of services to the members of the PSC to promote effective business engagement with and meaningful representation on the Board of the Global Fund.
What skills will you bring?
As the Focal Point (lead) for the PSC, you will bring first-class communication skills. You are an intelligent-talking and strategic thinker, and a fast mover able to work effectively with minimum direction. You’ll bring an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset to the role and the confidence to rapidly build strong relationships with each of our PSC members and across the wider Global Fund community (including the Global Fund Board, Secretariat, and other constituencies).
One of our organizational goals in 2022 is to build the influence of the PSC using the combined experience and voice of our members to challenge those who dismiss the private sector’s role in global health. Our aim is to inspire those already working with businesses to be more creative in their approaches to collaboration for better health outcomes across the three disease areas: HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria.
How and what we communicate to our PSC members will also be a priority for you in this role. Our content needs to be digestible and supremely well-structured so that members can intuitively access what is relevant to them. The Global Fund produces 1000s of pages of content every year; your job (working closely with the PSC Program Officer) will be to synthesize this information and create varied levels of insights – from elevator pitches, to detailed reports, to thoughtful and analytical summaries – for PSC members.
The Focal Point also represents the PSC in a wide range of external engagements and policy roles. For example you will support the PSC Board Member and Alternate at Board meetings; you’ll engage with the Global Fund Secretariat; serve as a policy advisor to the PSC members; provide policy analysis and develop policy position statements on key issues for the PSC.
A critical part of your role as the Focal Point will be to work closely with the Private Sector Board Member (Mr. Sherwin Charles, Goodbye Malaria), the Private Sector Alternate Board Member (Ms. Erika Satterwhite, Viatris) and the GBCHealth leadership team to boost the PSC brand, grow the PSC network and build strong and relevant partnerships.
What are your core responsibilities?
• Rapidly build a deep understanding of and strategic insights into the Global Fund and PSC priorities
• Develop, facilitate and manage connections between PSC leads, members, Global Fund representatives and the wider GF constituencies (e.g. governments, foundations, civil society, communities affected by the diseases, and technical partners)
• Lead partnership activities with the Global Fund’s private sector team and other global and Geneva-based institutions in support of private sector engagement around the three diseases
• Provide and/or oversee first-class communication in all areas, including producing corporate-quality, top-level analysis of GF documents, presentations, briefing documents and the annual report
• Work with the PSC leads on the annual work plan, and implement regular reviews to monitor progress, budget and effectiveness
• Apply streamlined project and event management skills, including budget management, governance compliance, reporting and other administration
• Work with the PSC leads and the GBCHealth team to plan and facilitate the annual PSC retreat
• Support the Chair of the Global Fund Donor Group (Paul Schaper, MSD)
• Manage the PSC Program Officer who supports the Focal Point on policy analysis, preparation of statements, summaries and minutes, outreach to PSC members, meeting/event logistics and administration
• Use technology smartly to advance efficiency across all aspects of the PSC Focal Point role
• Advocate on behalf of the PSC to raise the value of the constituency to the Global Fund
This position reports to the VP of Business Operations. You’ll work closely with the Program Officer and have support from other colleagues in GBCHealth as needed.
We expect you to have
• Strong relationship management and facilitation skills, including experience establishing and maintaining a collegial atmosphere of engagement with senior corporate/other leaders
• Demonstrated a strong client-focused attitude in your previous roles, and dedication to meet and exceed expectations from external partners
• Stellar written and oral communications skills, including the ability to translate complex reports and policy issues on a wide range of topics into clear, concise and strategic briefs, position statements and talking points
• Solid knowledge and capacity for thoughtful analysis and synthesis of global public health and development policy issues, institutions and trends
• Confidence to represent the PSC and GBCHealth at a senior level internally and externally, and to manage strong personalities within the constituency gracefully as well as firmly
• Proven ability to be self-directed and identify priorities and new opportunities with minimal supervision
• Strong project management skills, including capacity to establish and implement a structured work plan with clear objectives, timelines and deliverables
• Experience of managing an annual project budget of $400K or higher
• A positive, open attitude and willingness to work hard and strategically in fast-paced environments where teamwork and partnership is essential
• Strong organizational and time management skills, including ability to manage and deliver against multiple, overlapping priorities and deadlines
• Willingness to travel regionally and internationally (depending on pandemic restrictions)
• Stamina to put in long hours during and in the lead up to twice-annual Global Fund Board meetings
We would love it if you have
• Knowledge of and familiarity with the Global Fund, its strategy, governance and operations, and/or of comparable international multi-lateral organizations
• Experience working with the private sector on global health and development issues
• Experience and knowledge of public-private partnerships
• Familiarity with technologies to improve efficient program management, communication and online events
The Focal Point ideally will be based in Switzerland, although we’re open to you being based in Africa, Europe, the UK or the USA if you’re the right candidate.
