Events: CAMA Partners to Discuss Malaria Control in Lagos

To mark World Malaria Day, Corporate Alliance on Malaria (CAMA) will convene a group of key stakeholders to discuss malaria control and prevention efforts in Nigeria and across Africa. The forum, Accelerating Investment to Bring Malaria to Zero, will bring together business leaders, state and national governments and development partners to discuss strategies to increase malaria investments and efforts to ensure these investments are coordinated, impactful and sustainable. A keynote will be provided by the Hon. Minister of State for Health Dr. Osagie Ehanire. Partners will have the opportunity to showcase existing programs, exchange knowledge on best practices and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The forum will enable participating organizations to:

  1. Highlight key achievements and innovations in the fight against malaria
  2. Exchange knowledge on best practices for workplace malaria programs
  3. Network and identify potential partnership opportunities for malaria elimination program in Nigeria

CAMA will also release its latest publication detailing best in class corporate malaria programs. The report will explore the factors that have contributed to each program’s success and outline best practices for developing new integrated malaria initiatives.

Nigeria accounts for the highest number of cases and deaths from malaria in sub-Saharan Africa and a disproportionately high share of the global malaria disease burden. The country’s economy loses $1.1billion each year due to malaria-related absenteeism in the workplace and treatment costs, further about 300,000 deaths are due to malaria.

The World Health Organization’s Global Technical Strategy for Malaria calls for a 40% reduction in malaria cases and deaths by 2020. To achieve these targets, it is important for Nigeria and the country’s development partners to boost investments in malaria prevention, advocacy and case management; and ensure that these resources are driving long-term improvements to the health and wellbeing of Nigerians.

CAMA drives sustainable partnerships for malaria control and elimination in Africa. In 2018, CAMA is intensifying its efforts to end malaria for good by calling for greater funding, political will, awareness and increased collaboration efforts between sectors.
